Top Fuel drag boats. Take a look. Everything’s aero except ....for the back. If F1 went to enclosed cockpits, I think they should open it up elsewhere. The closed cockpit would make the designers go crazy and the car would become faster in a straight line but also give more downforce. (smoother air to the tail) Result? Even smaller engines to contain speeds. 1 liter turbo bike engines! F-that.

Take off the engine air scoop. In fact remove the bodywork over the engine after the roll structure. They can have their side pods all they want but guess what? It would create such turbulence that passing just might happen without a gimmick flappy wing and KERS. Make em safe and cripple the aero advantage.

OH, and for the top fuel boat fans, here’s some video of a 262mph pass.

I hope you aren’t suggesting that KERS is a gimmick. That’s just technological advancement. The gimmicky part is restricting its use and output. Less downforce would be cool too, but I really want to see pure insanity. Bring back ground effects, but ban front wings so that turbulence is no longer a major issue and it will be harder for teams to copy designs.

Yeah you got what I meant. I would like to see SPEC wings. insanity sure but the wings should be the same ones front and back. Anything in between can go, and make sure the engine sticks out a bit. Don’t let them have pure aero design. Something has to be mechanical.

On the bright side, they’re increasing mechanical grip for 2017 by increasing the tire size pretty substantially.

I want to see how unlimited KERS would play out. It would created interesting scenarios where the driver has to alter their braking to build as much boost as possible.

Absolutely. Make a modern car, but open her up. Show us the engine.

screw that, go closed cockpit, full aero and remove KERS limitation and open up engine specs more!! let ‘em go nuts!

I think they limit KERS to make for ‘better racing’....which is a joke, and to limit costs...which is equally as joke-ish. F1’s, and FIAs, primary goal is to make money, and it currently has the problem of trying to have its cake and eat it too: retain the best driving talent and automobile technology while simultaneously keeping the racing close with multiple teams (which requires keeping costs reasonable). If they de-limited a lot of areas, costs would spiral out of control and you would have a run-away team... but on the same token, don’t we have that issue now?

I wish there was a sanctioning body where the formula was very loose. They should all share a common cockpit for safety, then everything else is free. You’re only limited to fuel usage, tires, amount of engines/power units used per season. The racing would probably suck, cause there would always be that one innovation that makes a team so fast it consistently wrecks the rest of the field (like blown diffusers), but the amount of technology developed would be off the hook. The following year, the rest of the teams would adopt the best technology from the last year and it would naturally evolve.
